MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University has a weeklong series of events planned to celebrate the inauguration of Gwendolyn Boyd as the 14th president and first female president of Alabama State University.

Tuesday morning, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young spoke at the Bridge Builders Breakfast. Young was also one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s top aides, a member of Congress and the mayor of Atlanta.

He talked with the media about the important role of historically black colleges and universities.

"The things about HBCUs is that they restore the black family that has been damaged by slavery, government, and urban migration. It recreates a sense of responsibility and duty amongst our students that the nation really needs," Young said.
