The annual Wiregrass United Way campaign is underway. Dozens of well deserving organizations across the Wiregrass will directly benefit.
This year's campaign goal for the Wiregrass United Way is $2,626,000. If the goal is reached, the Wiregrass Foundation will donate an additional $400,000.
The campaign kicked off in August with a pacesetters event. More than 100 businesses in the area committed to holding an employee campaign within their offices. Leaders say in order to reach their goal by the end of the year the entire community is needed
Wiregrass United Way helps 37 organization. Without the extra funds, organizations like the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity would not be able to give families the opportunity of owning their own homes.
Last year the money habitat received contributed at least 10percent to their budget and helped them to make improvements to the store.
"Over the last two years we have been able to put in air conditioning and also put in some insulation," said Amy Schutz Executive Director of the Wiregrass Habitat For Humanity. "It makes it a much more comfortable experience for those that are shopping in our store."
"We have to make sure people are educated and informed on where their money goes," said Walter Hill, CEO of the Wiregrass United Way. "If people are being asked to give a portion of their hard-earned money to any organization, they need to trust it. We really work hard in making sure they know where the money is, how accountable we are for it, and the lives impacted by this are just going to be tremendous. It is making for a better area here in the Wiregrass."
Sept. 18 the Wiregrass United Way will hit the road and take its 2014-2015 campaign kickoff on tour, visiting all five counties they serve.
