OXFORD, AL (WBRC) -

The lock down at Coldwater Elementary School in Oxford has been lifted after authorities negotiated with an armed burglary suspect for three hours in the woods near the school.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson says 40-year-old Michael Bresley and an unnamed female accomplice were in the process of burglarizing a home in Alexandria when the female homeowner returned and found the pair inside her house.

Bresley allegedly pointed a gun at the homeowner and stole her phone before he and the female suspect fled from the scene.

A deputy later saw Bresley's gray van on Highway 78 near the Coldwater Winn-Dixie.

Deputies found the female suspect inside the van and arrested her. She is being questioned at the jail.

Sheriff Amerson says his deputies scoured the woods near the Winn-Dixie when he made the decision to bring in the armored personnel vehicle because the woods were too dense to walk.

Deputies found Bresley, but he allegedly held a gun against his head and said he wasn't going back to prison.

Sheriff Amerson said Bresley was previously sentenced to 20 years for burglary or robbery and served three years before getting out of prison.

After three hours of negotiations, Amerson says Bresley moved the gun and pointed it at his chest. He told them, "I expect to die today."

The sheriff said at one point, Bresley moved his gun enough that deputies feared for their safety and shot Bresley.

The sheriff didn't know how many times Bresley was shot or his condition, but said he is being treated at Regional Medical Center. Deputies are also at the hospital.

According to Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge, all students at Coldwater Elementary are safe. Students were allowed to go home around 3:30 p.m.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, Oxford Police Department and U.S. Marshals worked together to resolve the issue.

Charges against Bresley and the female suspect are pending.
