ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Highway 431 was reopened in both directions Thursday morning after a tanker that overturned in Albertville Wednesday evening was taken out of a ditch.

Albertville police closed northbound and southbound lanes of US 431 at Gilbert Baugh Ford around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials said the driver was coming over the hill and traffic was stopped in front of him. He was unable to stop and diverted his tanker off road into the ditch to avoid hitting other cars that were stopped due to a school bus being stopped on the other side of the road.

The driver, Christopher Wilson of Rainsville, was coming from Fort Payne, headed to Alred Marina in Guntersville. Police said he was hospitalized with a broken leg.

The truck lost over 2,000 gallons of fuel. Relief trucks from the transport company, Spirit Express, came late Wednesday night to siphon the remaining fuel from inside the wrecked tanker. Fuel that had spilled has been contained so as not to leak to nearby waterways, but has yet to be removed. Officials with the Environmental Protection Agency are expected to arrive Saturday to begin the process of removing that fuel.

Spirit Express has been in two other crashes this summer, according to reports from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The reports do not indicate who was at fault in either crash. The company has not had any major violations. The specific truck involved in the Albertville crash has a clean record.

Officials hooked up crane arms from two heavy duty wreckers and lifted the cab, which came apart, so they had to cut it in half. They picked up the wheel base half first, then the cabin.
