MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery City Council is announcing plans to implement new parking policies that are intended to encourage timely payment of parking fines and discourage violations.

"What's currently on the books is outdated, and this measure is our solution," Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. "Right now, someone who has an unpaid parking ticket from 1976 could walk into City Hall and still pay that same $10 fine after more than 30 years."

On Sept. 15, the fine for parking meter violations will increase from $10 to $15. After 30 days from the date of the ticket, the violation will increase to $25 and to $50 after 60 days.

Officials say this increase is a move to align the city's parking policy with that of similar cities. An example was the city of Decatur, which charges $25 for violations.

In addition to the increase in parking fines, parking an unauthorized vehicle in handicapped designated parking spaces will increase to $300.
