DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - An anonymous caller placed a call to 911 Thursday morning, in what the Decatur City Schools superintendent called a "disturbing and unusual" threat against Decatur High School.

According to Superintendent of the Decatur City School System Dr. Nichols, Decatur High School was placed on lockdown with a secure perimeter, which means the exterior doors were locked, but students had access to the school.

Nichols said the call is under investigation. The number could not be called back because it was a phone that could only call out to 911.

He also said Decatur police, Decatur Youth Services, and the Decatur crisis team responded to the threat.

He said only 10 out of about 1,000 students checked out. He said parents knew their kids were safe and that school officials would be communicating with them.

"We finished the day, had minimal check outs, and the students went to lunch and class," said Nichols. "We are working with the police department to see who the caller was and we are hoping folks will visit our website and let us know if they have any information."

Nichols also said a message was sent out to let parents know about the situation and another email will be sent out later Thursday afternoon.

"Our first priority is the safety of  the students, and a call like that is disturbing...it's not normal for us to have that," said Nichols.

Nichols said this is the first threat this school year and the first one in a while. He said everyone remained calm because the schools do lockdown and secure perimeter drills to prepare for situations like this.

No arrests have been made at this time.

If you have any information on the threat, you can visit the Decatur City Schools website or call the tip line at (256) 227-8514.
