MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A judge has issued a warrant for a man and woman accused of the death of their 18-month-old daughter, after they failed to appear for their trial Thursday.

Kristopher Joseph Speigner and his wife, Joy Lynn Speigner, were arrested last year in connection with the 2012 death of McKenzie Speigner.

According to court documents, the child died after swallowing a dishwashing detergent tablet. Authorities said the couple waited until the following morning to call for help, and was too intoxicated at the time to do anything to save the child.

The couple was due to appear Thursday for a bench trial, but when they failed to appear, the judge issued a warrant for their arrest.

This is the second time the couple has failed to show up to court. Joy Speigner's bond was revoked due to other charges she picked up while the case was pending.

The Assistant District Attorney said the pair didn't make things easier for themselves by not making an appearance.

"Last time we had a court date, we continued it, but they were still required to be here and they didn't show up at that time," explained ADA Jason Scully-Clemmons. "I felt it had to do with the fact they knew it was gonna be continued, and so that was not much of a big deal. But since they haven't shown up when there was no indication it was gonna be continued, that's obviously a little more serious."

The couple could face a maximum of a year in prison.
