Juvenile charged after Opelika playground set on fire

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -

A juvenile suspect is now charged with arson after police say he set a playground in Opelika on fire. 

Opelika Police say the fire was set around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of South Antioch Circle. Police and fire units responded to the scene where they located the juvenile suspect among the crowd watching the fire. 

Witnesses on the scene helped investigators identify the suspect.

Investigators say the juvenile was taken to the Opelika Police Department where he was charged with criminal mischief first degree and arson third degree. He was transported to the Lee County Youth Detention Center. 

Due to his age, the suspect's identity is not being released.
