Wetumpka teen dies following Montgomery shooting

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Police Department has opened a homicide investigation after a Wetumpka teen died from injuries sustained in a shooting on February 22. MPD officials say Brandon Brown died Friday at the Montgomery hospital where he was being treated.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 5700 block of Gas Light Curve. Authorities have not released any information on possible suspects or a motive in the case.

"I am certainly saddened by this event," said Elmore County Superintendent Andre Harrison. "I would ask that everyone please pray for the Brown family."

Elmore County Schools spokeswoman Judy Caton says a prayer vigil is planned for 7:20 a.m. Monday before school starts. The vigil will take place in front of the school at the flag pole.

Brown, a senior who played on the basketball team, is the sixth Wetumpka High School student to die in the past year. Three students were killed in a car crash that also injured another student and killed a sheriff's deputy. Another student drowned, and one died after a longtime health condition.

"One death is too many," says WHS principal Dr. Robbie Slater. "It's hard to put into words. The number of tragedies that we've had over the past year, your heart goes out to every family of every incident. Definitely, we're going to be thinking about Brandon and his family and getting through these tough times."
