MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - By now we have all seen the video that was released last week showing party-bound University of Oklahoma Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members joyfully chanting racial slurs. What they were chanting was disgusting, disappointing and not worth repeating.
I applaud the President of the University for taking swift and decisive action to make sure this act is never repeated by anyone in the O.U. SAE fraternity. This is guaranteed as the fraternity no longer exists on the campus of the University.
I would hope that the National office for this fraternity is in agreement with the decision.
I know that this was absolutely the right decision. I do not think that every member of that particular fraternity is racist. I doubt that every person chanting that chant considers themselves racist. However the point has to be made every time that this type of behavior cannot be tolerated anytime anywhere.
Last week I mentioned celebrating how far we have come while remembering how far we need to go. The event at the University of Oklahoma is a demonstration of both. Those students showed us very clearly that we still have a long way to go, but the administrations quick and decisive action has also demonstrated how very far we have come.
I applaud the President of that university for his decision.
My hope is that lessons will be learned by those that openly sang out hatred, and that this is not the end of the story for them but just the beginning. History has shown that hate and ignorance will flourish until understanding and compassion enter in.
The opportunity for change was there 50 years ago and it is still there today.
