MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - To our editorial suggesting that Alabama House bill 471 and a subsequent statewide vote on a lottery is a good idea, we got these comments:
"Since when does freedom and the will of the people become subservient to legislators needing money? Why is it contingent on how much the states will reap?"
"Watch out for any lottery bill...they usually benefit someone other than the taxpayers… follow the money."
"Citizens in this state will not fund government. And as a result we get… government by racket. The avenue to better government is not by starting another racket. It will only further risk the failure of self-governance."
"It might pass if and only if the money is not earmarked like other states. Florida, earmarked the money to only be spent certain ways. This should not be the same here in Alabama."
"I'm for a lottery that supports education, but if you read the bill, not a dime would go to education, all of the net proceeds are allocated exclusively to medicaid."
"A lottery is just another way for the rich to get out of paying their fair share and shifting the burden to fund our state to the poor."
"I think it's reprehensible not to let us vote on it. I know it's Alabama but it's still America."
As always, we welcome your comments.
