MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama officials say this year's Gulf shrimp season will officially open this week.
Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1I8m54N ) that officials from the Alabama Marine Resources Division announced Monday that the shrimp season will open at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The opening comes after routine shrimp sampling indicated the average size was larger than 68 head-on shrimp per pound within designated waters. State biologists will continue to sample and said a change in the average size could lead to additional announcements about the opening.
State officials remind commercial fishermen they have to provide boat registration, the boat owner's driver's license and social security number or tax identification number when buying a commercial shrimping license.
