MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A new community storm shelter for northeast Madison County and some emergency funds for a critical bridge repair are on the agenda for Wednesday's Madison County Commission meeting.

One key fire department says it desperately needs more money.

The Moore's Mill Volunteer Fire Department on Trailwood Drive Trent is asking for $800,000.

The fire department says it needs the money to continue serving the community.

They're asking the county to give them the funds, but if that doesn't happen, people who live in rural madison county could see higher fire insurance rates. That's because all rural Madison County homeowners pay taxes into the same account for fire service.

Madison County commissioners will hold a public hearing on the issue Wednesday.

Fire officials say $500,000 of that will go towards two new fire halls. The rest will go towards refinancing loans at a better interest rate and purchasing new equipment.

The Madison County commission meeting starts at 10 a.m.

WAFF will have much more on the fire department funding, the storm shelter, and that bridge repair on air and online after the meeting ends.
