"School Bus Safety Bill" passes; MCPSS to outfit every bus with cameras

MOBILE COUNTY, AL (WALA) - According to school officials, all Mobile County school buses are getting cameras for the outside of their buses. The school hopes to have the buses outfitted with cameras by January.

Though it's not listed on Alabama legislature's website, officials from the Governor's office confirmed that the “School Bus Safety Bill” has been signed into law.

That means for the first time in Mobile County, schools can put cameras on the outside of buses to catch dangerous drivers and then law enforcement can issue citations.

The new cameras are meant to capture images of the tags on vehicles so law enforcement can issue citations for drivers who speed through stop arms. Each bus will have 12 cameras placed around the outside of the bus.

"Once the word gets out there that our buses are outfitted with cameras, that in itself is going to sell in that people are going to be more alert, more aware that – Hey, I better stop for this school bus," Mitchell said.

Mitchell says the citations issued will pay for the camera service.
