Editorial: The PGA Tour is coming

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Next week the PGA Tour will make its first ever stop in Alabama. The Barbasol Championship will be played July 16th through the 19th at Grand National in Auburn / Opelika.

Grand National and the three courses on site are all part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. A very unique part of this event is that the RTJ course is a public course. A course that you and I can play any time at a very affordable price. The RTJ is the official host organization of the event and also hosts two LPGA events one in Prattville and one in Mobile.

This event is important to our region for several reasons.

The obvious is the estimated economic impact of $25 million. The revenue generated in hotels and restaurants over those four days will provide a great boost to the local economy.

Less obvious is the national coverage and recognition that the region will get from the live coverage on the Golf Channel. The positive attention given to this beautiful course will help drive more tourism and money to the trail and to Alabama.

So if you love golf like I do, or just want to get out and see some beautiful scenery and enjoy the spectacle, get out the Grand National next weekend and be part of the fun.
