Editorial: Downtown Montgomery is still safe

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Last Saturday night while thousands of local residents just finished enjoying a great baseball game and they, along with hundreds of others at nearby Riverfront Park were watching a fantastic fireworks display, a few unruly kids decided to ruin it for everyone.

In the end, that is what happened. TEENAGERS, UNATTENDED BY ADULTS at a city park acted like just that… unsupervised TEENAGERS and caused trouble with no regard to others.

One 14-YEAR-OLD BOY took it an extra step and shot a gun into the air. HE made the decision to get a gun, bring IT to a gathering of people and then HE DECIDED TO FIRE THE WEAPON. This is a very serious crime, and he should be punished appropriately.

However, don’t punish the city, the Biscuits or the restaurants, bars and BUSINESSES by staying away from the downtown area. Downtown Montgomery is growing and has so much more to offer than just a few short years ago.

The response to this isolated incident was swift and decisive, exactly the type of response we should expect. As the area continues to grow, and hopefully crowds for events get even larger, changes may need to take place so that TEENS are not out unsupervised.

(This can be solved easily by parents stepping up and not sending their children downtown by themselves.)

Otherwise, the city will have to take action. In the meantime, I will continue to frequent the downtown area often and I encourage you to do the same.
