Editorial: Change your routine

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It’s that time again. Summer is over.  We’ve moved from the vacation routine to the go to school routine. That is never an easy adjustment for most kids and has proven to be an even tougher adjustment for many parents.

Your children’s teachers and administrators work hard for them and are dedicated to giving your child the best education that they can. We all know that funds and resources are limited, even though on paper the Education Trust Fund seems well funded.

Any teacher can tell you they are working with far less than they need. The vast majority of teachers in this state are doing what they can for your kids. What are you doing? Did you change your routine along with your child to ensure you are providing a supportive learning environment for your son or daughter?

More than ever your kids and their teachers need your involvement as they work together to help your child learn and grow.

Statistic after statistic show that children whose parents are actively engaged in their education are more likely to make better grades, be more involved in extracurricular activities, have a higher graduation rate and stay away from trouble - just to name a few.

Make sure that you are making the necessary changes in your life so you can be actively engaged in your child’s education. You will make a huge difference!!

It is the most important thing that is happening in their lives right now and for that fact alone it should be the most important thing in yours as well.

The subject of legalizing marijuana is more openly discussed these days, but I sense I will be long gone before our state ever passes such legislation.

I can’t begin to thank all the people in Montgomery who went out of their way to make an outsider feel at home. In only a year and a half we have made lifelong friends, friends who we would count on with our lives and our children’s lives. But it is the South, and that is what you do.
