BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

He plays a lawyer on TV, but Sam Waterston is fighting a real life legal battle with several religious leaders in Birmingham.

Waterston is friends with the wife of Billy Kuenzel's attorney, David Kochman.

Kuenzel was sentenced in 1988 for the murder of Linda Jean Offord in Sylacauga, but he has said for years that he's innocent.

On Monday, his legal team accused prosecutors of withholding evidence that only came to light in 2010.

And they say his original lawyer was inexperienced and unprepared for the original trial. Now they're asking for another look at the case.

“If this was your relative, how would you feel abbot the trial that this person had, a day and a half trial where all of this evidence was withheld, where he didn't get fair representation,” Kochman asked.

“We're not casting blame, but we are saying that something has to be done about that. And I am confident that the facts will carry the day,” Kochman continued.

Billy is currently being held at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. The Alabama Supreme Court will decide the outcome of his appeal.
