Editorial: March of Dimes Citizen of the Year

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Next Tuesday the Alabama Chapter of the March of Dimes will honor Montgomery Biscuits owner Sherrie Myers as the 2015 River Region Citizen of the Year. She will be honored during the March of Dimes annual Roast and Recognition fundraiser presented this year by the law firm of Beasley Allen.

Obviously there are many deserving individuals in the River Region, but I am particularly happy with this choice. Sherrie has been an integral part of the downtown renovation since bringing the team to Montgomery in 2004. Without the Biscuits the downtown area would look nothing like it does today, and the coming changes on Dexter Avenue would be nonexistent. Add to that the fact that she succeeds as a businesswoman in a very male dominated arena, and you easily have your Citizen of the year.

What Sherrie does at the stadium on a nightly basis as an ambassador of the biscuits and Montgomery is why I think she is deserving of the award. On any given night at a Biscuits game Sherrie is there with a fanny pack full of baseballs to hand out, working her tail off to make sure that each person she comes across is having the best experience she, the biscuits, and the city of Montgomery can give them. Nobody works harder at customer service than Sherrie Myers. She understands her business and the role that she and Biscuits play in this community.

Congratulations Sherrie on this well-deserved honor.

The subject of legalizing marijuana is more openly discussed these days, but I sense I will be long gone before our state ever passes such legislation.

I can’t begin to thank all the people in Montgomery who went out of their way to make an outsider feel at home. In only a year and a half we have made lifelong friends, friends who we would count on with our lives and our children’s lives. But it is the South, and that is what you do.
