Collectors of Lego sets have made more money since the turn of the millennium than investors in the stock market or gold, according to a report in The Telegraph.

The Telegraph's analysis found stocks yielded an annual return of 4.1 percent over the past 15 years, while Lego sets increased in value 12 percent every year.

The analysis looked at data from Lego investing website, which uses Ebay listings to determine the value of Lego sets.

Many of the most popular (and the most expensive) sets are 'Star Wars' themed.

For example, the Ultimate Collector's Edition Millennium Falcon was released in 2007 with a retail price of $499.99. That set now sells on Ebay for $4,000 or more, an increase of more than 700 percent.

Sets in highest demand are those that are no longer in production, and in order to fetch a high price, they should be unopened and in perfect condition.
