MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Well here we are. The State of the State speech launches the 2016 legislative session and we will be off and running.  In years past the running seemed to be away from solutions to serious financial problems that face the General Fund.

For those who are a fan of the movie, Ground Hog Day could not be a more fitting day for legislators to converge on Montgomery to start a new session. In the movie, Bill Murray, despite all attempts to change the outcome, continues to wake up where he started the day before. In the end he does figure out how to achieve his balance, move forward and get the girl.

All signs lead to this session resulting in yet another reset instead of the happy ending. I am an optimist though, and will hold out hope that this legislature will find common ground on at least a few of the many funding issues that plague this state’s General Fund.

Work hard legislators, and here’s hoping we are not talking about a reset at the end of this session.

The subject of legalizing marijuana is more openly discussed these days, but I sense I will be long gone before our state ever passes such legislation.

I can’t begin to thank all the people in Montgomery who went out of their way to make an outsider feel at home. In only a year and a half we have made lifelong friends, friends who we would count on with our lives and our children’s lives. But it is the South, and that is what you do.
