Wiregrass cleaning up damage after Tuesday storms

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

Wiregrass residents and repair crews are out working to fix the damage caused after severe weather rolled through the area late Tuesday evening. The NWS office in Tallahassee intends to survey damage in Houston and Henry counties later in the day.

The Dothan Emergency Management Agency is asking residents to stay off roads in the west and north sides of the city that have debris and power lines down across them. Those roads include:

  • Murphy Mill Rd. between Barrington Rd. and John D. Odom
  • Cedar Springs Rd. between King Rd. and Ebenezer Rd.
  • 200 block of Hazelwood Ave.
  • North Range at Pinkard Ct.
  • Old Mill Run off Murphy Mill Rd.
  • 2200 block Westgate Parkway: use caution- low hanging power lines

There are also a number of road closures in Houston County. Those roads are:

  • Cedar Springs Road from King Road to Ebenezer Road
  • Fuller Road from S. Park Avenue to National Road
  • Glen Lawrence Road from Highway 84 to Jordan Avenue
  • Huskey Road from Highway 52 to Omussee Road
  • Ludlum (dirt portion) from Antler Road to Glen Lawrence Road
  • S. Park Avenue from Highway 605 to Fuller Road
  • Sheppard Road from W. Cook Road to Branton Road

The City of Dothan held a news conference Wednesday morning and provided reports on how agencies responded to the situation.

Dothan fire officials say they "hoped for the best and planned for the worst." They stayed busy, getting more calls in two hours than in a normal full day! A total of 35 calls were handled with a total of around a dozen minor injuries and six rescues. All were from vehicles.

There were multiple vehicle accidents that have to be dealt with. Houston County Commissioner Mark Culver is urging drivers not to go around barricades. He says a Rehobeth High School student drove around one on Fuller Road and ended up in a washed out section of the road. A photo of the El Camino is below.

Even if there are no barricades, be careful. Culver says a man driving his truck on Cedar Springs Road in the county had to be transported to an area hospital after the road collapsed under him.

There was also damage to several homes in the Houston County area. EMA Director Steve Carlisle said trees were on top of several houses in the county and several houses were flooded on Hilltop Road, Beaver Creek and Selkirk Road. Dothan Fire Department officials estimated around 100 homes were affected by trees and debris, a quarter of which included very large trees having fallen.

A large tree collapsed onto the garage of a house off Old Mill Run in Dothan. The garage and vehicles were destroyed, but the family escaped unharmed.

Homes and roads weren't the only things damaged by the storms. The athletic fields at Northside Methodist Academy in Dothan were heavily damaged. The bleachers and fences were destroyed.

Brad Kimbro with the Wiregrass Electric Co-op said there were wide spread outages in the Florala area and Geneva and Houston counties. Northeastern Houston County was hit the hardest, Kimbro said.

Dothan Utilities said around 25 power poles were downed by the storms. The hope is to restore more power by midnight Thursday. Major areas of concentration include an area along Westgate from Hwy 231 to 431 where major power lines are down, and along Redmond Road and Flynn Road.

HENRY COUNTY

Teams are also working to remove debris and fix damage in Henry County. The roof was torn off of a barn at Tumbleweed Ranch and landed on top of a pickup truck.

Owner Kim Lewis said no one was hurt, but it was a scary experience.

“It sounded very much like a train, and it was the silence after that really spooked us," Lewis said.

In Henry County, there are four county roads closed as of Wednesday morning -- county roads 103, 65, 66 and 70. CR 65 is closed east of Highway 95, as barricades block the road while crews work to clean up debris.

GENEVA COUNTY

In Geneva County, there are multiple roads closed:

  • Rehobeth Rd.
  • Underwood Mill Rd.
  • CR 99 north of CR 40
  • Nellie Dunn Rd.
  • Container Rd.
  • Mixon Miller Rd.
