(WAFF) -

The Alabama Department of Revenue is alerting employers to a fraud in which criminals send emails posing as company executives asking for detailed information about payroll and W-2 documents.

Scammers have reportedly tricked payroll employees into giving away W-2 information on current and past employees - including Social Security numbers, salaries and other personal data.

This information can then be used to file phony tax refund requests with the IRS and state revenue offices.

Employers with a My Alabama Taxes account will receive an alert to make them aware of the scam.

Companies that believe they have fallen victim to the scam should contact the Alabama Department of Revenue at 334-242-1300.
