MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - I don't know who coined the phrase "Timing is everything!", but it certainly was not Governor Robert Bentley.
When it was revealed this week that three of Bentley's cabinet members were given 80 percent pay raises last year, another 45 percentraise and a fifth cabinet member a 32 percent raise, reaction from the public and from some legislators was strong.
The arguments that these people may be doing a great job and may be worth the increase or that they were making much less than similar positions in other states or that in order to attract talented people in a competitive executive market, Alabama may need to offer these new salaries -- all those miss the point.
These raises were being given while state agencies were told to cut back, when the governor was asking for more taxes and when state employees hadn't gotten a cost of living raise since 2008 -- that's the point.
Running state government is complicated and difficult, but moves such as this that engender the ire of the voting public is no way to get re-elected.
No, wait. Bentley can't run again.
