Pope John Paul the Second was a charismatic Polish man who took totalitarian regimes to task and helped bring down communism in Europe.His other legacy is his unwavering message of morality, and his demand for an unswerving commitment to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.Under his leadership, the Vatican cracked down on dissenting Catholic theologians. The pope made it clear he saw no room for debate on such issues as the ban on the ordination of women, the requirement that priests be celibate and the prohibition on contraception.John Paul also pushed worldwide campaigns against abortion.A papal spokesman has said he believes John Paul will be remembered as "the defender of human dignity."
