MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - This week is National Nursing Home Week. The was created by a national organization back in 1967 and focuses on nurses home and finding the perfect one for your loved one.
For many, this can be a very tough and painful decision. How do you find the best place to take care of a loved one who can no longer do it themselves?
"People just don't wake up and choose to go to a nursing home," said Terri Howell with the John Knox Manor in Montgomery. "It's a needs based service."
The John Knox Manor kicked of its week by releasing 500 balloons to celebrate its residents and the people who work there. So how do you know when it's the right time to consider a nursing home?
"If the person doesn't have family that lives locally anymore or they don't have the ability to care for themselves, that's when you start to look at it."
Also, how do you know which one is the best option for what you are looking for?
"The most important thing you can do is go out and visit. See the things you want to see. Does it look clean? Is it orderly? Are there fun things for the residents to do?" Howell said.
There's a website the compares nursing homes in your city. Here's the link. There's more fun this week at the John Knox Manor. They have a luau, sock hop, and carnival.
