Interim Superintendent Wants Information on Teacher Background Checks

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) - Alabama's interim school superintendent wants more information on how school systems check teacher backgrounds.

State Superintendent Dr. Philip Cleveland wants to make sure this never happens again. This comes after a student in the Birmingham area filed a lawsuit saying she was the victim of a teacher who was working with a criminal record.
Phillip Smith III taught at Huffman HS in 2013. He pleaded guilty to trading grades for sex. He was allowed to keep his teacher's certification even after being convicted of a felony gun conviction in 2006.
