MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - We now have a new largest mass shooting record in the United States. The saddest part of that statement is that it is a record that will be broken. Probably sooner rather than later.
With the shooter being Muslim, it was easy to go straight to "terrorist act". With the killings involving assault rifles, it was easy to say, again, that something needs to be done about guns.
This seems to be about a troubled man who hated gay individuals. He hated them so much that he chose to take as many of their lives as he could. Whether that is an ideological issue or not could be debated. In the end one man chose to make that decision.
As a gun owner myself I am accustomed to the "we have to get the guns" as soon as something like this starts. My pro-gun upbringing immediately goes to "out of my cold dead hands".
That is the problem though isn't it. Strong anti-gun groups think all guns are bad, and if given high volume magazines or assault rifles they would want handguns and maybe more. The pro-gun contingent would never give up anything citing the second amendment and right to bear arms.
Both are wrong, and this is another great example of what is wrong with our political structure today. The far right and the far left refuse to meet in the middle.
If you are paying attention at all you have to realize that assault rifles and high magazine clips have no place in the public sector but meeting in the middle with no chance of additions to the list is the only way to get them off the streets.
