Selma police officer cleared in shooting case

SELMA, Ala. (AP)_A Selma police officer is back on duty after being cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting of his 11-year-old nephew.

Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said the Alabama Bureau of Investigation's final report concluded that the shooting was accidental and no charges will be filed against Officer Reginald Fitts.

Steven Starr Fitts was shot in the mouth and neck on January 27th during a visit to his grandmother's home to pick up some clothes.

The younger Fitts had to undergo reconstructive facial surgery at Children's Hospital in Birmingham to repair injuries that included having his teeth knocked out and a hole in his tongue.

Interim Selma Police Chief Jimmy Martin said he was not surprised by the outcome of the investigation.
