MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Character Day is September 22. Character is the most important predictor of health, wealth and happiness in adulthood.

Building character starts with humility, being as interested in others as you are yourself. A growing culture of disrespect in our country is at the root of many of our societal ills. We all should model a culture of respect within our homes, prioritizing family time with daily face to face conversation. Children must be called out when they are disrespectful to other children, adults or even themselves.

Over 40,000 groups in 70 countries have already signed up for the third annual Character Day and you can as well. Go to characterday.org to participate. Plan a character day for your students, employees, or own family or neighborhood.

You will be provided with free access to resources to help develop character, from films to printed materials. You can help build up our society and, yes, one person can make a difference. This summer in particular has been a challenging one for our country and our state. This is an opportunity to do a little something about it.
