COPY-Blue Cross says proposed federal insurance legislation bad for consumers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. A report by Blue Cross and Blue Shield says if the federal Association Health Plan legislation is enacted by the Congress, it would be bad news for consumers.

The plan is in response to the President's call for an umbrella system where small businesses could band together to get the same insurance coverage for employees already offered by larger companies. The reports says consumer protection laws and regulation would be thrown out and the door opened to unlimited insurance premium increases and the denial of claims. The House of Representatives is expected to approve A-H-P legislation this month and the Senate is debating it.Russellville optometrist Martha Greenberg, president of the Alabama Optometric Association, agrees with the assessment and recently relayed her concerns to members of Congress.
