The Dothan Police Department is having a little fun while raising money to buy gifts for sick children this Christmas.

Officers are seeking help from the community to win a "Best Beard" photo contest, which will allow them to extend their no shave November challenge.

Their goal was to raise $10,000 for Children's of Alabama Hospital. They've exceeded that in a months time and they want to keep donations and votes coming.

The winner of the contest will be allowed to keep his beard for the rest of the year.

Officers participating in the Facebook photo contest raised at least $100 to purchase Christmas gifts for kids at Children's of Alabama Hospital. Dothan Police Sergeant Maurice Eggleston is leading with 1300 votes.

"The cause is the main thing we're looking at trying to do. A lot of us have not had the opportunity to grow our beard in a long time. It's for Children of Alabama, one of the leading pediatrics centers in the country and to be able to say we're doing it for a good cause," Eggleston said.

"We would just like to say thank you to everybody that's sponsored the officers and have donated, it means a lot. It'll mean a lot to these children," said Dothan Police Lt. Will Glover.

To vote, visit the Dothan Police Department's Facebook page and like your officer's photo. Voting will end at noon on Friday.

Officers can still receive donations ?until Friday,? also.

Donations can be sent directly to Children's of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham or to the Dothan Police Department.
