MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

On Friday, Dec. 9, our family and friends of the River Region will have the opportunity to help their neighbors in need. As in previous years, the WSFA 12 News tents will be set up in front of the Walmart Superstore on Atlanta Hwy. from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. to accept your monetary contributions, new toys, and non-perishable food items.

We are honored that the Montgomery Area Food Bank has once again been selected (along with Toys For Tots and the Christmas Clearinghouse) to receive contributions from this event. All these charities do a phenomenal job in helping the less fortunate.

The Montgomery Area Food Bank has the responsibility to feed the “food insecure” in 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties. It is the largest food bank in Alabama.

I once had someone ask if the holidays were the busiest time of the year for us. My response was, “Not really. Hunger doesn’t take a holiday." It’s a 365 day a year battle we are engaged in. We are acutely aware that without your loyal support, we simply would not be successful in our mission of feeding hope across Alabama to children, adults, and senior citizens.

Each of these groups thanks you for your wonderful support.

Richard Deem, CEO, Montgomery Area Food Bank

The subject of legalizing marijuana is more openly discussed these days, but I sense I will be long gone before our state ever passes such legislation.

I can’t begin to thank all the people in Montgomery who went out of their way to make an outsider feel at home. In only a year and a half we have made lifelong friends, friends who we would count on with our lives and our children’s lives. But it is the South, and that is what you do.
