MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

I remember many years ago my wife and I took our young children on a road trip to Disney. We all piled in the car and ten hours later we arrived at our destination tired, cranky and ready for a hot shower, a good meal, and a bed.

We couldn’t wait to get out of the car.

Now, imagine for a minute that this car is your home. You are not on a fun road trip. This is where you live! There is no hot shower, good meal, or bed. What a shame that there are people living on the streets of our community today in this very situation.

Fortunately, there are several local organizations working hard to help these families. One of them is Mary Ellen’s Hearth, a transitional housing program for homeless women with children.

I have seen first-hand how they offer hope, help, and healing to these families. But, they can’t do it without our help, both financially and with our time and talent.

Please visit maryellenshearth.org to learn how to get involved. Or, for information on other agencies in our area serving the homeless community, contact the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless.

Instead of just counting our blessings this holiday season, maybe we can BE a blessing! What a difference that would make!
