CITRONELLE, AL (WALA) -

There are 20 weapons on the streets that shouldn't be.

Thieves broke into a sporting goods store in Citronelle. They didn't touch the knives, rifles or ammunition. They were only interested in one kind of weapon.

Thieves left behind a mess when they rammed a stolen red, Mustang through the front glass doors of Rowell's Sporting Goods on Highway 45.

They went straight for handguns in a glass case. Not revolvers. Just semi-automatics.

Store owner Tommy Rowell said he was on the scene within a couple of minutes after the alarm went off. Despite his quick response, he said, the thieves were already gone.

It was probably 20 seconds. There were here and grabbed about 18 to 20 pistols and they were out the door.

The car, which was stolen in Prichard, still had the keys in the ignition when it was left behind. The thieves escaped in a second vehicle.

"Hopefully, they'll catch these guys pretty quick, 'cause they're going to do it again pretty quick," Rowell said.

If you know anything about the getaway car used in the crime, or who stole those handguns, call Citronelle Police or the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.
