(RNN) – From clothing to candy to cheese curds, Americans know the price of love.

The average American shells out $136.57 on Valentine's Day, according to figures from the National Retail Federation. The organization predicted this year, U.S. consumers will spend about $18.2. billion this year.

About $4 billion goes for jewelry, flowers rack up another $2 billion.

Cards, clothes, a nice evening out are all figured into the mix.

Nontraditional gifts figure into the total, as well. But we aren’t sure how much people spend on pink-and-white cheese curds, a specialty item offered annually by Ron’s Wisconsin Cheese.

At $3.49 for 8 ounces, it’s a bargain if your lover loves cheese. And maybe, like chocolate, it goes on sale on Feb. 15.

Also in Wisconsin, a bakery served "love stinks" confections for those who have no honey. They have single-serving cookies and cupcakes - probably for hte people who gave their Valentine cheese curds last year.

And if you ever wonder where all those pretty roses come from - try Colombia. They grow a lot of stuff there.
