MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

This week marks National Consumer Protection Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness and increasing education about potential scams and helping to prevent them. Last year, the Alabama Attorney General’s office received 2,779 consumer complaints to its Consumer Interest Division.

“My office stands ready to provide education and assistance, and I am proud of the specialists who last year handled nearly 3,000 complaints and worked to prevent many scams from being successful,” Attorney General Steven Marshall said in a statement.

Marshall released the top five consumer complaints the office received in 2016. They were: automobiles, utilities, debt collection, home repair and retail purchases, in that order.

In his statement, Marshall said consumers are their own best allies against fraud and schemes.

He said the best thing consumers can do for themselves is be educated on where their vulnerabilities are, so they can protect themselves against anyone trying to scam them.

If you think you may be at risk for consumer fraud, you are urged to call the AG office’s consumer protection hotline at 1 800-392-5658.
