AL legislators debate allowing fantasy sports

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Could daily online fantasy sports games soon be legal in Alabama? Wednesday, state lawmakers debated the possibility.

In 2016 fantasy sports operators were forced to pull out of the state. Now, a bill is up for discussion that would legalize games like Fan Duel and Draft Kings. But opponents see these games as gambling.

State Senator Paul Sanford is sponsoring the bill. He says it's a popular way for people to have fun.

"I get emails on a daily basis about it," Sanford said. "Like I said an estimated 700,000 Alabamians have been playing these fantasy sports games.  They don't see it as gambling, and they want the opportunity to participate in that, and so that's all I'm really trying to do."

The Senate did not vote on the bill Wednesday. Sanford said they are waiting to see the House version of the bill.
