It may be the coolest treat around. Everyone loves a milkshake, right?

Different places to different things and have their own variety of flavors. So who makes them the best? “Simply Southern” TV let the folks of Alabama decide.

After counting thousands of votes, the winner, Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar in Opelika. So what makes this place so special? You could probably use just one word, family.

“My grandma and grandpa built this business 65 years ago,” said former owner Cora Reames.

While some people say change is good, this place has made its mark by staying the same. Hot dogs and milkshakes keep the place packed all day long. It’s a business that has always been in the same family.

“Grandma Story did it for 20 years,” said current owner Bob Boothe.

From Grandma Story to Cora, now Bob, so who’s next?

“When my husband retires next year my son will own it,” said owner Rhonda Boothe. “It will be four generations next year.”

As for the milkshakes? “We use real fruit, whole milk, and ice cream,” said Boothe.

“They are made one at a time,” said Reames. “ It takes a little longer but the quality is better.”

“We have chocolate, strawberry, pineapple, banana, walnut, hot fudge, and occasionally an orange shake,” said Boothe.

For the customers, loyalty might be an understatement.

“I’ve been coming almost 35 years,” said Rick Lane. “They’re good, creamy and thick. I tell my teenagers, real men don’t use straws.”

People have asked if they will ever move the location or make big changes to the menu but Rhonda has a good answer for that.

“People ask me all the time why don’t we tear it down and build a bigger place?” said Rhonda Boothe. “But why change something if it works? It wouldn’t be the same if we started over and made it new.”

The store is located off Pepperell Pkwy in Opelika less than a mile from the hospital. Check out their Facebook page.
