Republicans seek to create new legislative districts

Republican lawyers filed a federal court suit on Thursday that seeks new legislative districts in Alabama.

The suit is patterned after one in Georgia that helped switch control of the Legislature from Democrats to Republicans. The Alabama suit contends there is so much difference in population between legislative districts that they violate the principle of one-person, one vote. Senate Democratic leader Zeb Little says he's not worried. He says the current districts were approved by the U-S Justice Department and they stood up in a previous court challenge.

The lawsuit was filed today in federal court in Mobile by two attorneys who worked on the Georgia case and by former Republican judge Mark Montiel of Montgomery.
