MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Lawmakers have passed a proposal to declare Alabama a "right to life" state in the state constitution.

The Alabama House of Representatives approved the measure 67-14 Thursday during what the leadership dubbed "pro-life day" in the chamber.

The proposal would write into the Alabama Constitution that it is state policy to recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life. The move would be largely symbolic unless the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, the decision that legalized abortion.

The proposal will go to the state Senate for more debate. If it passes, a public vote will be held in 2018.

The House also passed bills giving doctors the ability to decline to perform services that violate their consciences and one that bans assisted suicide.
