SMUTEYE, AL (WSFA) -

When you open up a restaurant, sometimes all you need is a good name to catch someone’s eye. Then the food will do the rest. That’s definitely the case of a barbecue joint in Bullock County.

It’s in the town of Smuteye.

“They would always say folks got smut in their eyes from coming around the pit of the blacksmith’s shop,” said Smuteye resident Wiley McWhorter. “So that’s why they called it Smuteye.”

It’s about 20 minutes away from Union Springs and if you head down County Road 35, you’ll find a restaurant that has people coming from all over the state and beyond.

“I’ve got people coming from Montgomery, Wetumpka, Prattville, Selma, Eufaula, Columbus, Georgia, and Mississippi.”

You can probably smell the smoked meat from surrounding states. Wiley’s Smuteye Grill has been open for six years. If you’re looking for some good down home BBQ this is a stop you don’t want to miss.

For Wiley, it all started when he was a kid. His father owned a grocery store/food place in Smuteye. That’s where he learned to cook.

“Daddy started cooking on a pit there and I would help him cook when I was young. I really enjoyed it and I’ve been cooking ever since. I love to smell the smoke. I just love the smell of the fire and the meat cooking.”

When folks aren’t talking about the food, they’re talking about what’s all over the walls.

“We have a lot of old stuff hanging on the walls. There are a lot of deer mounts for people who love hunting.”

There are also times when they have live music, both inside or outside depending on the weather. It’s hosting the Smuteye Opry on Saturday, April 1, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Again, Wiley’s Smuteye Grill is about 15 minutes away from Union Springs off County Road 35. You can check out this Facebook page for more information.
