MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley will sign a proclamation on Wednesday designating April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Bentley will be joined by representatives from the Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Alabama Department of Transportation.

In 2016, more than 17,000 vehicle crashes in Alabama involved a distracted driver. Ninety of those crashes were fatal. By signing the proclamation, the state hopes to increase awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.

The signing will be held at the Alabama State Capitol at 2 p.m.
