WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

With a long list of educators in her family, one Wetumpka native is giving back to the community that she was born and raised in just like her mother and grandfather did before her, and her name is Katie Cole.

Cole found her passion for teaching amongst the kindergarten aged kids.

"Kindergarten is really my passion because the kids are so sweet at this age," Cole said. "They are loving, and there is so much growth from learning those letters and the basics of letters and sounds to being able to read, and read books by the end before they eventually go off to first grade."

If Cole wants to help build a strong foundation for her kiddos, she knows the best way to get through to them is by making learning fun!

"Well if you come into my classroom you see that we are not the typical classroom, I don't like to sit in your desk, stay in your chair, let's be quiet kind of things," Cole said. "We have a trampoline in our room; we even have a disco ball in our room! The kids get to pick their chair every morning... they don't sit in the same chair every day. Just the changes that the kids are able to have access to in the classroom really makes them feel comfortable and gets them exciting about learning."

What makes Mrs. Cole classroom so unique is the addition of a friendly, four-legged friend.

"Popcorn is our service dog who deals with children who just need an little extra love in their lives or maybe who are having anxiety issues and Popcorn is a great asset for those children," Cole said.

After a decade of teaching, these children have impacted her life for the better.

"I need them just as much as they need me... I think I have grown as a person and as a teacher because of them." Cole said.
