The new number one fire department is being built behind city hall in downtown Opelika. It will replace the old station, which is more than 50 years old. Mayor Gary Fuller says the time had come to build a new station, which should be completed by December.
"It will be administration. It will have fire apparatus, fire trucks, paramedics and emergency response teams. I think four or five bays they'll be operating out of. We wanted to give our firefighters the best place possible because they do such a good job," said Opelika mayor Gary Fuller.
The new fire station is costing nearly $3 million to build. Mayor Fuller says the city will likely tear down the old department and sell the property.
