Trojans prepare for NCAA Regionals after winning Sun Belt Title

TROY, AL (WSFA) -

For the third time in the last four years the Troy Women's golf team is on top at the Sun Belt Conference after the Trojans were able to capture the conference title last week down in Muscle Shoals.

"I just wanted this one so bad for these young ladies and the seniors," said head coach Bart Barnes. "They just worked so hard in their careers."

For senior Fatima Cano, her third ring will be her favorite by far.

"It's probably the most special one because it is my senior year," said Cano. "We put so much into it. We have a really good team and finally did it again. That's probably the most special one and it feels amazing."

It wasn't an easy path to the championship for the Trojans. Both Texas State and Georgia State gave Troy a run in the final round, but it was Becca Horner's 68 in round three that gave the Trojans the advantage.

"I haven't gone that low previously and I knew it was pretty close," said Horner. "I knew I had to keep close of the nerves would, die but it felt good."

"We really needed that kind of performance from someone and to have her step up as a senior in her last rounds as a conference player, that was just incredible," said Barnes.

An NCAA Regional is in the future for the Trojans, but they have their eyes set on a much larger prize.

"I really think this group wants to see if we can play our way out of regionals and make it to nationals," said Barnes.

"For me, to be on the team that made it to the regionals for the first time, it would be really special to be on the team that made it to nationals for the first time," said Cano.

The Trojans will find out where they will be headed for their Regional during the NCAA selection show Thursday at 10 a.m.
