ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

Let the Fourth of July Festivities begin.

But before that happens, here are some things to keep in mind to keep you and your loved ones safe.

"Have somebody that's going to drive you all home, whether you come by boat or by land you know and just think about, you know, life can end so quickly," said Cliff Willcutt, owner of the Lake Jordan Marina.

Corporal Jesse Thornton said that it already has been a deadly year on Alabama roadways.

“We've already seen some things happen on the roadways that have claimed several lives across the state," said Thornton.

He said that most of those accidents could have been prevented.

“There’s been some impaired driving that’s caused people their lives,” Thornton said. “Some speeding has caused some crashes, and a lot of the victims that have been killed have not been wearing seatbelts."

Thornton said that the best way to stay safe on a boat this Fourth of July is to wear a life jacket.

“A life jacket is the best way to be prepared when it comes to being out there on the open water. That is your best safety device you can have access to,” said Thornton.

As for fireworks, consider attending one of the many firework shows in the River Region.
