BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) -

Birmingham-based HealthSouth Corporation, which owns and operates inpatient hospitals and provides home-based care, will soon rename itself to Encompass Health Corporation.

"This name change and rebranding initiative reflect our expanding national footprint and the strategy we are pursuing to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care across the post-acute continuum," said HealthSouth President and CEO Mark Tarr.

The name will be taken on by both HealthSouth and Encompass Home Health and Hospice, which in 2015 merged with HealthSouth.

The company's name isn't the only thing that will change. A new logo will also be adopted, and there will be a new home office in Birmingham.

HealthSouth estimates that the rebranding could cost the company up to $30 million over the next several years.

The change will come into effect Jan. 2, 2018.

What became Healthsouth was founded in 1984 by Richard Scrushy. Within a decade it became the nation's largest rehabilitation care provider.

Scrushy and several other top company officials were ousted from Healthsouth in the early 2000s amid an accounting scandal. While Scrushy was ultimately acquitted on all counts against him, he was ordered to repay Healthsouth nearly $3 billion.
