SECMD17: Malzahn discusses Auburn quarterback situation

HOOVER, AL (WSFA) -

The final day of SEC Media Days saw one of the more popular teams at the Wynfrey Hotel, the Auburn Tigers. Besides the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Tigers definitely had the most fans waiting in the lobby waiting to catch a glimpse of head coach Gus Malzahn and the members of the Tigers team.

The question on everyone's mind was dealing with the quarterback situation for the Tigers.

Jarrett Stidham enters the fray as the presumable favorite to win the starting quarterback job, but Malzahn isn't ready to name a starter at the moment especially now since Sean White is back at 100 percent.

"The biggest comfort right now is we have quality depth at the quarterback position," Malzahn said. "Jarrett Stidham is a very talented young man. I think that's a common sense deal. What he's done since he's been at Auburn, just his leadership. I'm very excited about Sean White. When Sean White's healthy, he plays at extremely high level. Last year when we got on that roll, that six-win streak, he was leading the league in completions and quarterback efficiency."

An area the Tigers aren't worried about is at the running back position where the Tigers have several returning players who contributed to one of the top rushing teams in the NCAA last season. Along with Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson, the Tigers will have Kam Martin and Malik Miller to help carry the load in the backfield.

On defense, the Tigers lost some key contributors in Carl Lawson and Montravius Adams, but the Tigers have some depth on defense to step up in their departures.

"We need some guys to step up and fill that void," Malzahn said. "Marlon Davidson is a guy that started as a true freshman. From the moment he got on campus, he didn't look like a true freshman. He looked like a veteran just with the way he practiced, his work ethic, how tough he was. And he's a handful."

Malzahn was joined in Hoover by defensive back Tray Matthews who called Davidson a "freak on nature" and sees him as someone the Tigers can look to on defense.

The surprise attendee for the Tigers, kicker Daniel Carlson.

Malzahn has went on record saying Carlson is the best kicker in all of college football, most SEC football coaches might agree, but Carlson doesn't want to toot his own horn on all his accolades. He just want to do whatever is asked of him to help the team win.

"This is my fifth year and I was here during 2013, and it feels special and similar to that year," said Carlson. "We’re all working hard and this team is really coming together. All of the talent and all of the pieces of the puzzle that need to come together, we have a shot at a really special year. I think we’re all just going to have to wait and see, but I’m really excited for the first game.”

The Tigers now head back to Auburn to get ready to begin fall practice and then hit the field for the season opener against Georgia Southern on Sept. 2
