DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

A suspect was shot and killed while attempting to rob members inside of a Dothan church, according to police department officials.

Dothan Police say Steffon Perreese Valentez Tolver, 26, was shot and later died during the commission of a robbery.

Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 2500 block of Westgate Parkway to the Crossroads Baptist Church on the report of a robbery. When they arrived at the church they found Valentez dead in the parking lot, police say.

An investigation determined Tolver entered into the back door of the church. Once inside, police say Tolver robbed the parishioner of about $50. Tolver then attempted to rob a church staff member. The staff member fired his personal handgun once, striking Tolver in the upper torso.

Tolver fled out of the back door of the church into the parking lot where he succumbed to his injury. Police say a knife was found near Tolver.

None of the members inside the church were injured during the robbery. It is unclear if the church staff member who shot the man will face charges.

Editor's Note: Initially we reported the suspect was armed with a handgun. This has been corrected to indicate a knife was found near Tolver.
